March 2018 Newsletter

Gomera Walking would like to share these moments with you. Here in La Gomera you soon realise that beauty and nature go hand in hand. You can hear and see beauty all around you while you walk.  Sit and listen to the soothing sound of the goat-bells, as the goats graze in the mountains , and hear the occasional cronking  of ravens or the distant squeal of a hawk. These are often the only sounds you'll hear to break the quiet stillness of the island.  In spring the mountains turn green with new growth with splashes of white from margaritas, yellow from Cerrajones and purple from the Tajinaste (indigenous species).  The lush evergreen forests are carpeted with spring flowers. Stop and listen you may hear the sound of the wind passing through the branches of the trees.......

The night skies in La Gomera are wonderful. With so little light pollution to spoil your view you can stargaze for hours. So if you are a stargazer and like to sit quietly and enjoy the gentle sound of the waves lapping on the shore as you gaze at the sky you have a surprise. The Cory's  Shearwaters which come ashore to breed in the cliffs have arrived! These fabulous seabirds have colonised the cliffs in La Gomera. Here in Santiago we have a large population. They are nocturnal on land and can provide hours of entertainment as their ghostly shapes swoop and dive around you calling out their distinctive  calls as they go.

Colorful wishes

May 2018 Newsletter

The details of the new Gomera Walking season for 2018-2019 now available on our website and we are taking bookings.

This year we will be starting on 14th November and running through until the beginning of May. You will found dates and prices here.

Tourist numbers visiting the Canary Islands in the winter months have increased by 15 percent. La Gomera remains relatively obscure compared with its larger and noisier neighbour Tenerife. However, walkers are drawn here because of the quietness and unspoiled beauty that we have to offer and we are expecting more people to arrive next season. This increase puts pressure on the self catering and hotel accommodation industries so we do advise you to book early.
.
On the good news front...Airline services and prices to the Canaries remain competitive.

Best wishes and hope to see you in La Gomera during winter 2018-19

February 2018 Newsletter

Gomera Walking

Hi << Test First Name >>

February is the shortest month of the year and this year it has been  full of spectacular events. The weather has been incredible. We have had winds that were so strong it looked as though the palm trees were being blown flat but no they are very resilient and are still standing.

Torrential rain has filled the barrancos ( ravines ) and at last the reservoirs are practically full again. One day we saw three water spouts just off the coast at Santiago - a truly amazing spectacle.

At last the weather has settled down and we are able to see the benefits of the rain. The mountains are green, the flowers are full of buds and the almond trees have blossom. Throughout February we had 3 walking groups and were able to walk every day. This is just one of the wonderful things about our small island. If the weather is not so good in one area,  just around the coast or on the other side of the mountain you can have perfect conditions.

The last week of February is traditionally carnival time in Santiago. This is a very special time for the local people. Entire families get involved from the very young to the very old. Each year has a theme.  This year the theme was Asia. The parents, the children and the schools work so very hard - the  aim being to make this year's carnival better than last!  It's a joy to watch, the colours, the atmosphere and  the children's faces as they parade in the procession. The result was wonderful.

Hi << Test First Name >>

So here we are 2018 and as I write we are already expecting our sixth group of the season. We have already had some fabulous walks and our group members have been an interesting mix of people. We have recently welcomed  walkers from new countries, Canada and Sweden. Walking in beautiful scenery unites all nations. We have always found in our groups that language is no barrier when you are out enjoying nature together.

This year we have had very little rain. For the people who come here to walk this is good because if you want to walk in the rain you can stay where you are in Northern Europe and go out any day and get wet. No, you like to come here when your own country is shivering in the dark,  cold ,wet winter months to get some of the finest walking in the world, in the sunshine, where you only have to fly 3-4 hours to get here. However, here in La Gomera we expect to get some rain throughout Autumn and Winter. That is why our island is known as the Beautiful or Green island with our wonderful flowers, valleys full of white margarita daisies as far as the eye can see. Trees full of sweet smelling almond blossom  ready to produce the most delicious sweet almonds you have ever tasted. This year, like I said , we have had very little rain and consequently flowers and blossom are late. So last  week when I saw some blossom I was excited now, hopefully, we will see a lot more in order the get our supply of delicious, fresh, home grown almonds.

Good news for those who didn´t book a holiday for this year - yet, we still have availability is as follows:-
14 - 21 February .....3 place available Premium & Popular.
21-28 February .....4 places available which can be either Premium or Popular
7-14 March ....6 places available Premium & Popular.
21-28 March .... 9 places available Premium & Popular
4-11 April .... 7 places available Premium (zero single occupancy) & Popular

To book use our on-line form here....but please check with me for update on availability before arranging flights.

Schedule and bookings now open for new season 2017-18

Our new schedule for next season 2017-18 is now live on Gomera Walking and ready for booking.

We start on 29th November and this year will run through to mid April and you can find dates and prices here.

The past couple of years have seen a dramatic increase in the number of tourists visiting the Canary Islands in the winter season as other winter sun destinations such as Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey etc have become less popular for various reasons. La Gomera while still relatively off the beaten track has also become more popular and this has put it's limited accommodation especially 4 star Hotel Jardin Tecina under pressure. Regrettably prices have risen and despite our best efforts to resist we find ourselves in the situation this coming season with no option but to pass on these accommodation increases to our clients.
However we have tried very hard to keep increases to the absolute minimum and we promise to continue to build on Gomera Walking's reputation for high quality service and value built up by Andy and Paddy over the past 7 years of operation.....we are proud to say this is our 8th year in business.

On the good news front.....airline services and prices to the Canaries remain competitive and of special interest to our solo travellers we have succeeded in securing  three weeks on our Premium Package with zero single occupancy premium.

Best wishes and hope to see you in La Gomera during winter 2017-18
